Pressure sores, also known as pressure ulcers or bed sores, can happen when a person is lying in one position for too long. This causes the skin to become damaged from being pressed down by either the body’s weight or external forces, such as a wheelchair.
The best way to prevent pressure sores is to keep your loved one moving around as much as possible. If they are bedridden, try getting them up and walking around every hour or so. If you have a wheelchair at home, use it to take them for walks around the neighborhood whenever possible.
If your loved one is confined to bed, make sure they are positioned on their side so that the weight of their body is distributed evenly across both shoulders and hips. Additionally, make sure they’re not wearing anything tight-fitting, like underwear or socks, that could cause constriction of blood flow in their legs or feet. This could lead to tissue damage over time.
